Description

M27, the Dumbbell Nebula, is one of my favorite planetary nebulas.  Love the shape and wispiness of the gas clouds along with the associated colors from the various elements.  I shot this about a year ago with my Lunt LS80MT.  This was with my Vixen ED103S setup.  I'm coming along with Vixen.  There are a few more minor issues to deal with.  I have a flattener on order, which is needed.  I had to crop the corners off of this image because of the "egging" of the stars in the corners.  The flattener should remove or come close to removing that.  I need to do some fine tweaking of the optical path as analysis with PI and CCD inspector both show some tilt issues but I don't wish to go after those until I install the flattener and see what I can do to eliminate the bad deformation in the corners.

Just a slight tinge I notice of red in the background.  I can probably get rid of that with some more judicious use of masks and some color suppression in Photoshop.  I will look into that.  Finding out a lot of valuable things I can do to center on that last 5%-10% of polishing, which usually ends up being 80% of the effort.  All a process.

Enjoy!
